Zombie Crow, Anyone?

After a ten day break, I'm ready for a little more masochism

I hadn’t intended to take ten days, but I guess my brain was overwhelmed by the extended effort of the last piece of line art?

I mean, it did take me 18 hours spread out over 10 days, so it’s not unexpected that I needed that break. Part of it was the exhaustion. Part of it was not knowing what to draw next.

I had ideas, and I even sketched a couple out—a jellyfish, Cthulhu, spiders—but they didn’t work out for me. They just looked wrong, like they didn’t belong in that space on the canvas.

So my brain did what my brain always does, and figured it out while I slept over the next few days. Well, at least the beginning. And on February 14th, I got to work.

What if I drew part of a tree, but instead of long lines, make it look braided or looped? When I got the basic sketch down, I felt like a moon needed to be behind it.

I was going to draw an owl, but I’d just done the owl skull, so… What if I did a crow, and not just a crow, but a zombie crow?

I adjusted the moon behind its head, finished the frame, and added a skull, with the bar going right through it. But the tree part looked a little… plain, so I added eyeballs.

That first night was three hours of work, all sketching and placement.

This is the best corvid I’ve ever drawn, which makes me really happy, because I’ve been frustrated by earlier attempts. I love how his bones are exposed throughout his body, and that skull is *chef’s kiss*

I think this may be one of the best pieces I’ve done in the past year, and I’m looking forward to its progression.

Let me know what you think!
