Did you know I didn’t start drawing until 2015?
Sure, sure, I decorated cakes, but back then I would say that was the only way I could draw. Add in that I had some weird idea that I could be a writer or an artist. Not both. And no one said that to me. I just somehow got there.
Though, if I’m honest, that was probably the linear thinking process of my undiagnosed autism. But I digress.
So, yeah, anyway, drawing came as my world was falling apart. Was I good at it? Nah, fam. Nah. But it saved my life.
And for the next few years, I taught myself to draw. There was a joy in it. And a sense of peace, too.
In 2023, I joined Threads. Being on the ground floor of something completely new, my growth shined not only in finding the biggest audience I’d ever cultivated but the ever-evolving purpose of my art. It was there that I had the idea that snails, something I loved to draw, needed costumes.
This series was the cumulation of that little thought.
Was all of it good? Given how subjective ‘good’ is in art (and other things), I’m happy to say that they’re good enough for me. And my audience.
All of this is to say that it’s never too late to try something new. You’re not going to be great at first, but don’t let that stop you. You don’t need to be to enjoy a new skill and/or hobby.
Which of my snails do you love the most?
What are you working on this week? Let me know!
