Black Sketchbook Adventures | 10 & 11
Is that a bookmark or an act of masochism?
Good morning, fam!
Today, I want to talk about the next two pages of this project.
Before these pages, I think I started to see where I wanted to go with this sketchbook.
Is it going to be an experiment? Yes.
Am I going to try and trust the process? Also, yes.
So let’s get dive in, shall we?

These two pages took me a few hot minutes to get out. Let’s break them down.
The bookmark is a full page, and if you follow me on Threads, then you know how much I enjoy torturing my dominant hand. While the circles inside the bookmark are pretty clean and standard sized, those squares were a test of my patience, especially since I didn’t want them all to be layered like scales, you know? But I’m really happy with how it all came together
Now, this guy was my first real add of pops of color. Unlike the lines in the jellyfish pic, the addition of the pale blue here just felt better for this piece. To be honest, he wasn’t intentional. I started with the hat, just knowing it was going to be an animal.
But then I realized I made the hat too small to look proportional to, say, mouse ears. While trying to figure out what else would fit, I could see an owl.
Does anyone else do that? Look at a blank canvas and see the image that will go there? Surely I can’t be alone, right?
Anyway, so from there, he got a monocle and bow tie. Then the cane and briefcase. While I wish I’d given him another claw on each foot, those feathers are awesome. I really like them. A lot.
Thanks again for being here and checking out my work! Posting here feels better for my sanity, if I’m honest. It lets me better express what my process and thoughts are behind each piece.
Until next time!
