Black Sketchbook Adventure | 1-3
A new project just for my Substack fam
Hello, my art fam!
I recently found a new love for black paper. So, when my latest order arrived with a black paper sketchbook, I decided I wasn’t going to share it on social media. Instead I’m keeping it here, just for you!
Oh, and since it’s a new sketchbook, you know I had to decorate the cover first!
A little neurographica with a coprinus comatus in lovely pastels (both standard and metallic) over a white background, I am so happy with how this cover came out. I’ve missed drawing mushrooms, so I think I’ll be doing some more in the future.
Now, I’m not doing this sketchbook as a once-a-day project. Instead I’m going to do it as my muse (and ADHD) inspires me. And I’ll post 1-3 pieces in every, er, post as we go along.

So, for today, we’re going to check out the first three.
Swirly Swirl Swirl
This was an experiment. Though I’ve loved all the art I’ve done on black paper, I have to admit I was afraid of messing my project from the start. So this established kind of what I want to do in this book.
Minotaur Threats
This second drawing was inspired by some eyes I saw in an anime. For some reason I thought they’d be good for a minotaur, but I couldn’t get the muzzle the way I wanted. And if I’m honest, I’m not happy about the mouth either. I may redraw him later.
Hello, New Friend!
Now this little guy? Love him. If you have followed me in the last year, you might recognize him. I’m so in love with this design.
I’ve been entertaining an idea of writing a children’s book around him. Like he’s come to Earth and wants to make friends, but he’s shy. Or another one, where he is worried about how people are talking about him being different.
If you have a story idea, let me know! And I’ll give you a free copy and credit in my acknowledgement.
